Tenebrae Service

Tenebrae, or “darkness”, is drawn from the Liturgy of the Hours as celebrated during the final days of Holy Week. It is characterized by the gradual extinguishing of candles. When the church becomes completely dark, the Christ candle is carried out a loud noise, or “strepitus” is heard, symbolizing the convulsion of nature at the death of Jesus.
